How flexible are you when it comes to award travel

The big drawback with frequent flyer programs is that the availability of award seats is always limited and it’s often difficult to secure seats during peak periods - usually the very time you want to travel!

This shouldn’t be of concern if you have some flexibility. But if you are limited to traveling during peak periods such as school holidays, this could pose a major problem. In this case, consider using your reward points to “purchase” travel directly rather than first converting them to frequent flyer miles. The only disadvantage of this tactic is that it’s usually more expensive, but you do get the advantage of increased availability.

The way you purchase your airline tickets, rather than exchange frequent flyer miles, is to use the card’s “miles to cash” redemption program if one is offered. Before you get too excited about this option you should know that the average redemption rate is somewhere around $.01 per mile.

At that rate, the bargain $299 round-trip fare you saw on the internet will require you to turn in 29,000 frequent flyer miles!
